First of all, I had a moment to reminisce about all things Furr's when I started researching for this article.   Furr's was a huge thing in most of our lives.

It was a great place to get a ton of food.  I remember the days when it was cafeteria style and you had your tray and had people serving food onto your plate.  Then you would get to the end and get the evil eye from your parents because they charged by the item.

My favorite thing to this day is the cafeteria potatoes, Furr's was the only place that had them other than school cafeterias.

Now that I have waxed nostalgic for a bit, Furr's is gone from Amarillo.  That's three Furr's in my life that have come and gone in Amarillo.

When you drive on Soncy there is a sad building between the Drury Inn and The Plaza, it's a giant building that once had a happy buffet and stuffed people.  Now it's empty and dark.

However, that might not be the case for much longer.  Now before you get super excited, Furr's isn't coming back but it looks like something else may be taking it's spot.

According to a link on Bizapedia, a restaurant business name has been filed.  The name is Route 66 Family Buffet, LLC.

Route 66 Family Buffet, LLC is a Texas Domestic Limited-Liability Company (Llc) filed On May 11, 2022. The company's filing status is listed as In Existence and its File Number is 0804562133.

The Registered Agent on file for this company is Barbara Belflower (address redacted), Amarillo, TX 79106.

It also goes on to mention that The Holland Island, LLC is also a company contact on the Bizapedia page.  I decided to check out the address on PRAD and according to PRAD, The Holland Island has owned that building since 2007. They have been in ownership since it was Furr's Fresh Buffet.

Update 6/6/22 10:00 AM: One of the managers of the new Rt. 66 Family Buffet reached out to me this morning with some more information on the new restaurant.

Bobby Gilchrist, a manager for the new restaurant said, that the new Route 66 Family Buffet will be a buffet like Furr's was before the pandemic.

Tt's going to be kind of similar but it's gonna have a new feel and and it's going to be in that particular building.

If you remember Furr's pre-pandemic, patrons could walk around buffets and serve themselves, the server would bring drinks to their tables and refills.

The lady mentioned above as the Registered Agent will be involved during the early part of the restaurant mainly for training purposes, but then will step away.    Many of the managers coming into this new endeavor previously worked for Furr's and among all of the managers there are about 150 years of experience.

Gilchrist went on to tell us that they hope to be open by September or October.

Does this mean we will see a new buffet moving into the building?   Will the Register Agent Barbara Belflower be the new owner, or will she just be leasing the building?

Will they remodel it with fun Route 66 memorabilia?  Will it be a giant buffet?  Will it have those amazing mashed potatoes?  Will those behind Furr's be helping out with this new business.  I have many questions and I will continue to look for answers.  I'll share more info as soon as we find it.   Only time will tell.

Let's hope Route 66 Family Buffet will be something amazing and help us create new memories of buffet eating.
