Being late is an annoyance. Not just to you, but to the people around you. Unfortunately, there are several situations in Amarillo that cause people to be late.

Amarillo is not a huge city. The entire city covers only 90 square miles. The average commute time in the Amarillo area is 16 minutes. We don't have high volumes of traffic on most days.

But while it seems like Amarillo is the ideal city to drive around in, there are cases where being late is out of your hands.

"There was a fender-bender on the Canyon E-Way, traffic was backed up for miles."

Occasionally, a bad accident causes a huge hold-up on the Canyon E-Way. Unfortunately, a minor fender-bender stops all traffic from Hollywood to Rockwell on a daily basis. Cars are moving at 5 mph, cops are parked in the middle of the road, and it's all for a scrape on a bumper.

The smell of Hereford knocked me unconscious.

Hereford, located just 30 miles west of Amarillo, is the beef capital of the world. Sadly for us, on certain windy days Amarillo is blanketed with the scent of cow manure. It gets so bad in the spring that it could be considered toxic.

My car was blown off the road.

Sorry Chicago - the real windy city is Amarillo, Texas. On any given day, we might have 50 mph winds. If it's enough to blow over a billboard, it's enough to blow your car off the road.

I couldn't see through the dust.

Because of the terrible wind and the lack of vegetation, "kicking up the dust" is more than country music lyrics. It can get so dusty in Amarillo that you can't even see the sky. That's a driving hazard, in my opinion.

That new restaurant opened and people were parked in the street.

Amarillo isn't exactly a hub of activity, so when a new restaurant opens, everyone gets there as quick as they can. It's practically impossible to try a new restaurant in the first week it's open because of the crowds. Sometimes, you can't even go down the same street as the new restaurant because of the traffic.
