There are certain things in the Texas Panhandle and the Amarillo area that you could just count on. The wind is one of course. Then there are the area events that are held yearly that would bring a smile to your face.

At those area events, a lot of us were used to seeing Pokey the Clown, aka Doug Smith. He would drive around in his fire truck or pass out Plains Milk. He always wanted to bring joy to everyone he saw.

A Legacy of Laughter: The Life of Doug Smith

Pokey would be out at rodeos, races at the speedway, and would show up at the city parades. Pokey retired back in 2015 so he could spend more time with his grandchildren. While that was a great reason to call it quits, Pokey didn't stay fully retired.

There would be certain events that he would just show up to. I know I would see him at area parades, and every time we would run into him, he would bring happiness to everyone around.

Reunited in Peace: Tributes Pour in for the Smith Family

That joy got a little dimmer this past weekend as the news spread that Pokey the Clown, Doug Smith, passed away:

Pokey The Clown (Doug Smith)
You will be missed by the racing community. Thank you for all that you did for us and for keeping us entertained for so many years! May you rest in peace! (Please keep Jeff Smith and family in your prayers) - Michele Douglas
As the memorials continue to pour in, the one thing we won't forget is just how much Pokey the Clown was loved in our community.
On this Monday morning, we take a moment to remember our dear friend Doug Smith, aka Pokey the Clown. His presence brought joy and laughter to so many in our community, and he touched our lives in ways words cannot fully express.
Doug is now reunited with his beloved wife and no longer in pain. While our hearts are heavy with grief, we find comfort in knowing he is at peace.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Smith family during this difficult time. May his memory continue to bring smiles and remind us of the joy he shared with us all.
Rest in peace, Pokey - Bad Habit Motor Sports
Amarillo seems a little bit dimmer with the news of Doug Smith's passing. It's a sad day for his family and our community.
