Thrifting Just Got Easier for the East Side of Amarillo
It's been said that Amarillo is growing, and it seems more and more businesses are choosing the east side of Amarillo to open.
We recently shared that Hud's is opening a new location on the east side, joining another slew of new businesses. The east side is starting to grow just as fast as the Southwest side of Amarillo.

East Amarillo Continues to See Business Growth
Another business is expanding to the east side. The Lawndale Shopping Center will now have a great place to do some thrift shopping.
Goodwill Confirms Third Amarillo Store
Goodwill is opening its third store in Amarillo, located in the Lawndale Shopping Center.

Where the New Goodwill Will Be Located
The new Goodwill Store will be located at 2271 SE 27th. This building was the former home of AIG in Amarillo.

Goodwill currently has two stores in Amarillo:
- 1904 S. Bell - Thrift Shop and the Career Center are located here
- 5807 SW 45th Ave, Suite 205
Remodel Timeline and Expected Opening Date
According to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, remodeling of the building is expected to begin in January 2026, with completion by May 2026. The estimated cost is $175,000.
We reached out to Goodwill of North Texas, and they confirmed that they are opening the new store in Amarillo and are very excited about it. The store is expected to open in April 2026.
More Than a Thrift Store
According to Robin Rayney, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Northwest Texas, the new location will operate as a retail store similar to the Bell Plaza location. The building will also include a satellite career resource center, with the training center expected to open at a later date.
Career Resource Center Coming to East Amarillo
What many people may not realize is that Goodwill also operates career resource centers. While most people think of Goodwill as a thrift store, the organization does much more, offering job training and career development programs to help people enter or advance in the workforce.
Long-Term Plans for Amarillo
This is just the beginning of bigger plans for the city. Rayney shared that Goodwill has a long-term strategic plan in place for Amarillo.
It’s been a wonderful community, and we really love the dynamic. There are so many different parts of the community working together to build a better, stronger, and thriving Amarillo,” Rayney said.
2026 is expected to be a big year for Goodwill of Northwest Texas, with plans to open three retail stores and two career resource centers.

Goodwill of Northwest Texas serves over 40 counties, including Lubbock, Plainview, and Amarillo.
Goodwill’s History and Mission
Goodwill was founded in 1902 by Rev. Edgar J. Helms in Boston. In the basement of the Methodist church, he opened the first Goodwill store and hired those who had previously come to the church for handouts. These people worked repairing and selling items that were collected. Goodwill's philosophy was “a hand up, not a hand-out.”
What This Means for East Amarillo Shoppers
This will be another great opportunity for the east side of Amarillo, offering another option for affordable goods.
