
Why the Fourth of July Is One of Texas’ Deadliest Travel Holidays
America is turning 250 this year, and millions of Texans will be traveling and celebrating for the holiday. The 4th of July holiday has historically been one of the deadliest in the Lone Star State. However, more people will be celebrating this year, which means more parties, more travel, and more deaths.
According to AAA Texas, 5.7 million Texans will be traveling, and 4 million of those will be traveling by vehicle. The more people on the road, the more opportunities there are for irresponsible behavior.

- Drivers under the influence
- Speeding and distracted driving.

TxDOT Steps Up Enforcement for July 4th
The Texas Department of Transportation will kick off its Operation Crash Awareness Reduction Effort on July 2- 5. This means more law enforcement will be on the roads looking for those drivers who are speeding, intoxicated, and violating the Move Over, Slow Down Law. What the July 4th Crash Data Shows
In 2023, TxDOT recorded 57 crashes and 64 fatalities during the July 4 weekend. According to TxDOT in 2024, the July 4th weekend brought 54 crashes and 64 fatalities in Texas. Reports for 2025 were not available, but the July 4 holiday weekend brings more crashes and fatalities than any other holiday weekend.

How to Stay Safe on the Road
- Have a designated driver who stays sober
- Leave earlier and don't drive during peak hours
- Stay alert - put the phones away
- Make sure everyone in the car is buckled up
- If you're tired, pull over and rest
This doesn't account for all the other fatalities due to accidents or crime across Texas. This holiday brings more injuries and fatalities across the board.
