The Problem Surrounding The Mystery Of Amarillo’s First Walmart

As with any city or town in the USA, Walmart is an indispensable landmark for anyone living within its proximity. Having four supercenters and two neighborhood markets in Amarillo alone, it's hard to imagine a time when we could not save and live better.

But that was not always the case. Yes, there was indeed a time when Amarillo had to survive without a Walmart.

Finding The First Walmart Of Amarillo

Recently the question of where the first Walmart in Amarillo was has sparked some debates in local Facebook groups. Some say that the first location occupied what is now the present location of United Supermarkets on 45th and Bell, while others claim that I-40 and Grand housed Amarillo's first Walmart.

Although the I-40 and Grand location is still in operation, the alleged 45th and Bell location no longer exists, making this journey for the truth a bit more difficult.

But thankfully we live in a day and age where just about anything can be found on the internet. After doing some digging around the web, the true "first" Walmart of Amarillo Texas was finally revealed to me.

The True First Walmart?

After visiting the Malls and Retail Wiki and searching through a list of every Walmart that has opened in Amarillo, I found what just may be the first location.

According to this wiki, the two first locations to open in Amarillo were the Coulter and Grand locations. The Coulter location is said to have opened in 1984 while the Grand location opened in 1986.

Although this could be an answer to the question surrounding where the original Walmart is located, there is still one question left unanswered.

The 45th And Bell Walmart

There was much discussion about the first Walmart being located on 45th and Bell, but in the list shown above there is no mention of it. This could bring the accuracy of this list into question, which means that there is still a chance that the Walmart on Coulter is not the first Walmart.

So which Walmart really is the first, is it the one on Coulter or the one on Bell? That's a question that may remain unclear for some time as of right now.
