The Amarillo Police Department received a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation to fund extra police officers to concentrate on seat belt and child seat violations.

You might not know that Texas law now requires every single person in a vehicle to wear a seat belt.  That include passengers in the back seat.  All children younger than eight, must ride in a child safety seat or booster unless they are taller than 4ft 9in.

Amarillo has seen 9 fatal crashes this year that took the lives of 11 people.  Three of these deaths were because the person was not wearing their seat belt.

On a more positive note, according to a recent survey 87.7% of people in Amarillo wear their seat belt.

Make sure putting seat belts on is a habit in your car.  It could save you a ton of money, but most importantly, it could save your life and the life of your passengers.
