Texas Is Knocked Out Of Being The Top State People Are Moving To
Over the past several years, Texas has built a reputation for being the top state for people to move to. There have even been multiple high-profile stories of celebrities leaving California to relocate to the Lone Star State. It seems like every day you see a barrage of social media posts asking about moving to Texas. Despite it all, Texas is no longer the number one state people are moving to.
Texas Is No Longer The Number One State That People Are Moving To
From 2021 through 2023, Texas was the highest-ranking growth state in the U.S. According to the U-Haul Growth Index, Texas saw the most instances where people were traveling one way into the state with their U-Haul rentals for those three years. In 2024, that all changed.
Last year, Texas was dethroned by South Carolina. This is the first time that South Carolina has ever topped the list. Lower taxes, lower cost of living, climate, and growing job market are all reasons listed for why.
Texas Still Ranks High On The List Of States People Are Migrating To
It's not all bad news. The Lone Star State slipped only one spot, to number 2 on the list. The fact that we have no state income taxes, a mostly affordable cost of living, and a thriving job market was enough to keep us almost at the very top.
There's a lot to love about being in Texas, like our state and national parks, the food, the fact that we have everything from mountains to beautiful beaches, and all the reasons listed above. There's also a very unique culture that exists in Texas that you don't get anywhere else. Texan pride is a very real thing.
For what it's worth, the state that saw the biggest amount of people leaving was California. They came in last place. You can see the full results of the study and the rankings by following this link.
