The Texas Senate voted on Monday (March 4, 2019) to approve a senate bill for teachers to get a $5,000 raise.

According to NewsWest 9, the bill was approved by a unanimous vote of 31-0 to get teachers a raise of $5,000.

The author of the bill also included librarians in the bill after hearing public testimony from librarians and teachers.

State Senator Jane Nelson (R-Flower Mound), said the testimony helped her to amend the bill before it hit the senate floor.

While laying out the bill Senator Nelson said she realized that all who work with school children needed a raise and to begin with teachers.

"Nearly one in three new teachers hired in 2012 completely left the profession in five years," she said. "We have got to reverse that trend."

Senator Nelson indicated there will be other bills filed in the coming days to increase pay even more with incentive-based raises and more money for retired teachers.
