Trick or Treating is a fun activity for any family on Halloween.  Halloween is an opportunity for kids to get dressed up in their favorite character costumes and go from house to house.  Not only that, sometimes its fun for the parents to dress up and go with their kids trick or treating.  However, as fun as trick or treating is, you have to take in consideration some safety tips to make it the best time on Halloween.

  • Cross the street at corners, never cross in the middle of the streets. Make sure to look both ways before crossing the street
  • If possible, make sure your kids are in light colored costumes or have some sort of reflectors on them if they are trick or treating after dark. Or have them carry glow sticks or flashlight so they can be seen in the dark.
  • Always trick or treat in areas that you are familiar with in your town.
  • Only trick or treat at houses where the porch light is on or the front door is open, this signals that the house is open for trick or treating.
  • Never go inside someones house unless you know the person and the person is a friend or family member.
  • Never get into a strange vehicle
  • A parent or adult should always trick or treat with young children
  • If your older children are going trick or treating alone, plan out a trick or treating path and plan a time to be back at home.  If possible send a cell phone with your child.
  • Make sure your child has your name and number on them somewhere just in case they get lost or separated from the group.
  • Always check your children's candy before letting them eat the candy.

Have a safe and Happy Halloween.
