Why Do Amarillo Pools Close? Here’s What to Know Before You Go.
One of the best parts of the summer months is swimming. Whether it's at a pool, lake, or some swimming hole that's been a family secret for generations, it's the best way to spend a hot day.
If you have plans to visit one of Amarillo's pools, there's one thing you should be on the lookout for. It can ruin your day in an instant. Watch out for the weather.
Amarillo Pool Weather Rules Explained
There are some pretty strict policies in place when it comes to the weather and the city pools in Amarillo, Texas. Already this summer, we've seen the pools close because of the weather.
The weather policy for Southeast, Southwest, and Thompson Park pools is:
- No Thunder
- No Lightning
- It Must Be Over 75 Degrees
Thunder and lightning make sense. You usually don't have one without the other, and you don't want to be around when one of those connects with water. The temperature is an interesting thing.

This week started with the pools closed, thanks to the ambient air temperature being lower than 75. That's a bummer for everyone hoping to kick off summer at the pool.
The good news is that there is plenty of summer left. Southwest and Southeast pools are open through August 10, and Thompson Pool is open through Labor Day.
Pool Hours and Seasonal Dates
Southwest and Southeast pools are open Tuesday through Sunday from 12 PM to 6 PM. Thompson Pool is open every day through August 10, then after that it's only open on the weekends through Labor Day.
Thompson Pool has two sessions. The first goes from 12 PM to 3 PM. The second is from 4 PM to 7 PM.
When Are Amarillo Pools Closed?
We shouldn't have any problems staying above 75 degrees for the summer. Hopefully, we don't have too many storms during the day. We need the rain, but it would be nice if it would come after closing.
