Don’t Trash the Easter Eggs! Shells are Great for Gardening

Now that Easter has passed and you have leftover boiled colored Easter eggs, what are you going to do with all those shells?  Don't throw them away, especially if you have a garden.

Eggshells are great for gardening!

How are eggshells good for gardening?

Eggshells have a lot of calcium in them which is good for the garden soil.  It helps control the acidity in the soil.

How does it work?

Grind the eggshells down.  You can do this in a food processor, put them in a bag and roll over them with a rolling pin or a meat mallet until fine, or if you have a mortar and pestle, you can grind them that way.  I would go the easiest route.  Then mix them into your soil.  As the shells break down in the soil it releases calcium.

How often do I add eggshells?

Add them in the hole when you first plant.  Then sprinkle them into the soil and around the plant every couple of weeks or so.

What else can I do with the eggshells?

You can use eggshell halves and fill them with a bit of soil and start seedlings?  When they are ready to plant, you put them in the ground egg and all.

Also, if you have those icky pests in your garden, you can crush the eggshells and just sprinkle them in your garden, and they will help keep those creepy pests away.

So don't chunk your eggshells.   Keep them, crush them, add them to your garden and watch your plants thrive!

It's a great way to use one item for multiple uses.
