Fire Danger Returns To The Texas Panhandle This Week

Even with record rainfalls to kick off October, we will see a risk of wildfires return to the Texas panhandle for the rest of the week and into the weekend. The northwestern part of the panhandle did not receive as much rain which means drier conditions persist in the area. Over the last week and a half, we have seen a streak of fairly warm and dry weather which has allowed field grasses to dry out and become prime for burning. Breezy winds and low humidity levels will stay with us through Sunday and allow for fires to spread quickly if ignited.

The National Weather Service is asking everyone to take precautions to prevent wildfires. Do not toss lit cigarettes on the ground, secure safety tow chains on trailers from dragging and sparking, do not park or drive over tall grasses, and if you do not need to burn to avoid open fires. Always check with your local officials to see if a burn ban is in effect and be sure to report any signs of wildfires.
