Is Everything Bigger In Texas? Yes, Including Our State Capitol.

Texas is fascinating. Everywhere you turn there's some weird road side attraction with a backstory that sounds like something that came out of a whimsical 1980s children's movie. The history across our state is odd and incredible. We take a lot of pride in it, so much so that we will not be denied even by Washington D.C.

Is everything really bigger in Texas? Yes, and that includes our state capitol building.

One of the things you have to get used to when you move from somewhere else to Texas, is the insane size of everything. The state itself is massive. To cross it, you need to be like a frontier explorer. Get someone to fund your journey and get yourself a guide.

Then you look at all of the road side monuments we have, the statues, the buildings, and the list goes on. Everything is huge. Our gas stations, looking at you Buc-ee's, are big and even sell patio furniture.

So, why would we hold back when it comes to our state capitol?

The capitol grounds cover 22 acres. That's roughly 1/5 of the Vatican, which is a city-state that takes up just over 100 acres. The building itself, though, is where we get a real Lone Star State sized "neener-neener" in.

Our capitol building is taller than the US capitol building. The Texas capitol building stands at over 300 feet tall. The US capitol building? A paltry 288 feet.

Those 12 feet seem a little petty, if you ask me. Those 12 feet seem really on purpose, if you know what I mean.

The next time someone from out of state gets a little sideways and makes some joke about everything being bigger in Texas, just look them dead in the eye and say...
