Is Disney Eyeing Lady Gaga to Play Ursula in ‘The Little Mermaid’?
A Star Is Born actress Lady Gaga is undoubtedly having a "Shallow" moment, but it's possible the superstar may be heading to the deep end of the ocean in the future.
Disney is rumored to be considering the pop star-turned-movie-star for their upcoming live-action adaptation of their hit 1989 animated musical, The Little Mermaid.
While Zendaya was recently rumored to be in the running for the role of the titular princess, Ariel, Gaga is apparently being eyed for a more wicked role: Ursula.
Disney gossip blog Disinsider shared that Gaga's name is "high up on Disney's wish list" to play the tantacled villain, though the report is unconfirmed and Disney representatives declined to comment on it.
While many have called for a drag queen to play the role of the Sea Witch—considering Ursula was based off of real-life drag queen phenom Divine—we wouldn't mind hearing Gaga belt out her own over-the-top, campy rendition of "Poor Unfortunate Souls."
Currently in development, Disney's live-action The Little Mermaid is just one of many live-action adaptations of previous animated hits, including 2017's Beauty and the Beast, 2015's Cinderella and 2016's The Jungle Book.
Upcoming films include The Lion King, Mulan and Aladdin.
