The other day, while watching the news, I saw a story about Perryton ISD considering arming their staff to help protect the kids in the event of a school shooting.

Granted, when the news was talking to the Perryton ISD superintendent Mireles about arming their staff, he did say that it would be entirely voluntary; any teacher that didn't feel comfortable with a weapon in their classroom wouldn't be required to carry one. This brings up my first question. How will the gun be stored and secure?

Superintendent Mireles also stated that any teacher who opted to carry on campus would be required to have a Conceal Handgun License (CHL); additionally, he planned to screen everybody, meaning only he would know who would be carrying. The identities of the armed staff members would remain anonymous to everyone else.

He went on to stress that there would be extensive training. This brings me to my second question. How often will their training be?

As a preliminary measure, superintendent Mireles has sent a survey home with all the district's students with a return deadline of two weeks, giving parents ample time to think about their response. Once the two weeks are up and the survey answers are collected, the district will hold an open board meeting with the community to foster an in-depth discussion before any final decisions are made.

According to superintendent Mireles, should this measure pass, it will likely not be put into place until the next school year.

I get why they want to implement this into place as a way to help save the lives of the students. In my opinion, if they take the proper steps and do everything correctly, this is a great idea. But only if done correctly.

But what do you think? How would you feel if Amarillo ISD or Canyon ISD tried to adopt this policy? Would you be supportive or would you shoot it down?
