Amarillo Featured On A PBS Special

Let's be honest with ourselves here for a minute.

Amarillo isn't exactly a hotbed of entertainment. Sure we have some history, but we don't often pop up as a place that gets visited.

Outside of Cadillac Ranch, of course, and the fact that we're a big part of Route 66 history, Amarillo doesn't exactly set the world on fire.

Well, it looks like we're about to find out a bit more about Amarillo's history that you may not know about.

PBS has a show called, "The Great Muslim American Road Trip".

A little background on the show for ya. A Muslim American couple traveled around the country to learn about Islamic history across the states. They also explore what it's like to be a Muslim American in different states today. Oh yeah, they do a little jazz history as well.

In the second episode, set to air on PBS tomorrow evening, July 12th, the couple, Mona Haydar and Sebastian Robins roll through Amarillo as they cover a stretch from Tulsa to Albuquerque.

According to a release put out by the show, they state, "The Texas Panhandle is another unexpected destination for a surprisingly steady stream of Muslim immigrants,".

The couple met with the Catholic Charities of the Texas Panhandle on their stop in Amarillo.

They discussed things such as people seeking refuge and asylum as they enter the country and how they help them here in Amarillo. They speak with Amarillo native Lokaman Rahim who apparently speaks glowingly of our city.

The show airs on Panhandle PBS at 9 pm on Tuesday.
