Independence Day is a time for celebration and gathering with friends and family. There are cookouts to look forward to, parades to watch, and plenty of fireworks.

As much as the holiday can be for us, it can be really tough on our pets. Come July 5, social media often fills with posts from people trying to find dogs that ran off because of all of the noise.

Fortunately, there are some things you can do to reduce the amount of stress your pets will be under. In Amarillo, you have several options.

Why Fireworks Are So Scary for Pets

First, if at all possible, you'll want to keep your pets indoors. If you're a dog owner who's been through an Independence Day with your four-legged friend, you know they aren't fond of fireworks. The loud explosions can terrify them and cause them to run away.

While they're inside, make sure they have access to a quiet spot with some of their favorite toys. I always turn the TV up a little bit louder than usual, just so the only sound my dog is hearing isn't the fireworks exploding.

Consider Boarding Your Pet in Amarillo

If you're going to be out of town, consider boarding your pet if possible instead of leaving them alone. Amarillo has several fantastic places where you can board your pet.

Make Sure ID Tags and Chips Are Updated

In case your pet does manage to run away during the festivities, there is something that you need to do ahead of time. Make sure your tag and microchip information is current.

If your pet escapes, this will be crucial in getting them back home. It's one of the most important things you can do.

July 4 is a holiday that most of us enjoy. Make sure this year it isn't a holiday that's tough on your pet.
