And The Winner Is: Here’s The Most Popular Halloween Candy In Texas
Ahhhh yes, Halloween. The time when all the ghouls and goblins come out to play.
And by ghouls and goblins, I mean all the kiddos running door to door for some free candy.
I remember growing up and going through that bag or pillowcase and sorting out what I got in my travels. We all got candy we loved, and candy we hated. That was part of the game. In my older age though, I started to wonder what the most popular candy was at Halloween.
Why you might ask? Well because now I'm the one buying it, and I wanted to be sure I was the hero of the street by handing out the best candy on the block.
Every year, candystore.com does their Halloween candy map, showing what seems to be the most popular candy in the country, then broken down by state. So this begs the question, what are the top candies handed out at Halloween?
The top 3 across the country are Reese's Cups, Skittles and M&M's in that order. What about just in Texas? Well lucky for you, I've got them right here.
#3: SOUR PATCH KIDS
This one makes my oldest kid happy. He LOVES him some Sour Patch Kids. I'll say I enjoyed them as well when I was a kid, but not to the extent he does. If you loaded up his Halloween bag with just these, he'd be the happiest kid on the planet. Well I've got good news for him. Over the last 14 years, Texans have given away 610,116 pounds of those little sour treats. Seems like a big number doesn't it? It pales in comparison to #1 on this list. Heck, it's even small compared to #2 on the list.
#2: REESE'S CUPS
Here's my personal favorite. Like my kid above, if you loaded my bag full of these, I'd probably make another trip or two around the block in a different costume. There's just something about them that I can't get enough of. It's gotta be the peanut butter in there. You know how they make that stuff? It's a combination of peanut butter...and powdered sugar. I think. At least I think I saw that somewhere. Either way, I love it. It's addictive, so says the 880,526 pounds of it given away. I'm just disappointed it's not #1.
Oh those fruity individually wrapped little squares. Texans over the last 14 years have handed out 916,491 pounds of this delectable little treat. Think about that, nearly 1 MILLION pounds of Starburst have found their way into bags all over the state. With how small they are, it makes you wonder just how many squares that adds up to. I guess the denseness of the candy helps add a LITTLE weight to it, but that is a staggering amount of fruit chews thrown into the bags.
Take a look below to see what the top 3 are in all the other 49 states. Some of them will surprise you. I'm also appalled at how many times candy corn shows up in different states top 3. Thanks for not being one Texas.
