Is Amarillo Good For Jazz? Oddly Enough, It Really Is.
It might just be me, but it seems like Amarillo, Texas is a pretty good place to be if you enjoy jazz. We just got done with June Jazz at Amarillo College, and now there's another "jazz-fest" kicking off that goes through August.
What's the deal with the massive amount of jazz in Amarillo?
Amarillo, Texas: An Unlikely Haven For Those With A Taste For Jazz
Seriously, we have a lot of jazz in Yellow City. More than I've seen in a lot of other places.
This year was my first year to attend June Jazz at Amarillo College. The place was pretty packed. Every single night. That's when it dawned on me.
Amarillo, Texas is an unlikely hot spot for jazz.
When I moved here, I expected everything to be cowboy hats and two-steppin' with some kid sawing a fiddle in half. I didn't expect all of...this.
There's Even More Jazz Happening This Summer
In case you weren't aware, there's another fest of sorts that takes place this time of year that is dedicated to jazz. It takes place on Georgia in Wellington Square.
It happens every Thursday starting at 7PM. Night one is this week (7/6).
You'll notice that there is one big difference between this one and, say, June Jazz. There is a ticket price. The setup seems similar, other than that.
This fest runs through the months of July and August, with the final night being on August 31.
Don't worry, though, if you miss out on some of this one. If memory serves me correctly, there will wind up being even more jazz in the fall.
