Amarillo History: Discover the Former Identity of This Location
If you take a drive around Amarillo you will notice a lot of pretty neat buildings. It's always fun to see if you can figure out the history of the building. What did it use to be? Of course, businesses come and go in Amarillo so if you have been in Amarillo for any amount of time this is something you can play.
There are some buildings you just know right away. Like when Tyler's Barbeque first opened you knew that building used to be a Long John Silvers. Even if you weren't living here when it was a LJS you can just tell. Tyler's has since moved down the road and into a much bigger location. So now you can say this building used to be Tylers and Long John's.
There are several buildings around here that are like that. It's like taking a trip down memory lane. It can be a fun game to play with friends. "Hey, do you remember when Homeland used to be in this location?" you say as you drive by the Doller General on Georgia.
That game can be played for hours. It's a fun way to pass some time and learn about the history of Amarillo. Over the holiday I saw a conversation about a building in Amarillo that I had no idea about the history of it.
Looking at the building I could not automatically guess what the business used to be. So this was a fun one to discover. It is now a Valet Cleaner and it is located at 9th and Bushland.
I have driven by it several times and never really thought much about it. So this was really cool to learn. This building going back to the simpler times used to be a Dairy Queen.
Yes, it was a Dairy Queen back in the sixties and seventies. Reading about the history when this Dairy Queen first opened it had a flat roof and no indoor dining. Then sometime in the sixties, this roof was put on and indoor dining was added. It also had a drive-thru.
It sure is fun to drive around the city and discover some great history about the city. This one building was the latest that I got to learn about. I will think about this being a Dairy Queen every time I drive by now.
