The mosquitoes in Amarillo can be awful, especially with all of the rain we've had. The City of Amarillo recently sprayed, hoping to cut back on this menace's population.

Fortunately, there are things we can do to help fight back in our own backyards. We all know the basics. Wear mosquito repellent and make sure there is no standing water in your yard. These are two of the simplest ways to fight back.

One of my favorites is using different varieties of plants. Citronella is great, and you can find it at greenhouses and nurseries around Amarillo or purchase candles almost anywhere. Plant it near the areas you like to spend time outside. Mint and basil also work well.

Homemade Sprays and Remedies

Another favorite of mine is using apple vinegar spray. Mix equal parts water and apple vinegar, then spray it outdoors around windows and doors, or a little on your skin.
