
Ride-Alongs, Jail Tours, and More in Potter County’s Citizens Academy
Everyone is aware that the sheriff's office exists, but how many of us really understand what happens there? That question will get answered in an upcoming free opportunity.
The Potter County Sheriff's Office will soon host its 17th Citizens Academy, offering a unique opportunity for you to learn firsthand about the sheriff's office and witness its operations in action.
The Citizens Academy is a free course open to the public, providing everyone with the opportunity to see how the sheriff's office operates. It gives you a chance to see all of the different divisions in action and to gain an understanding of what it is they do.
When and Where the Citizens Academy Happens
The Potter County Sheriff's Office Citizens Academy will start in September. It runs for 12 weeks, meeting every Tuesday from 6 PM to 9 PM. During this time, you'll get hands-on experience and get to meet with the sheriff. You'll even get to go on a ride-along.

What You’ll Experience During the Academy
There is an extensive list of what you'll be doing during the academy. Some of the things you'll be doing are:
- Hear from Patrol and Estray, Texas DPS, Potter County Fire & Rescue
- Hear from the County Attorney and the DA's Office, and the County Judge
- Hear from the Criminal Intelligence Unit (Narcotics, HWY Interdiction, K9)
- A full night of jail review and a tour of the jail
- One Saturday spent at the shooting range
- Go on a ride-along

That's just scratching the surface. Over the 12 weeks, you will learn the ins and outs of how the sheriff's office operates, and it's free to attend. At the end, there's even a graduation ceremony.
