Look At These Early Photos of Historic Homes in Amarillo

When you hit the red brick road here in Amarillo, you immediately know where you are: the historic district.

From a bird's eye view, it's easy to see how Old Amarillo sprawls outwards from center city in a rusty red patch. I know that this town was founded in the late 1880s, when everything was still wide open windswept prairie. There are times when I'm driving down the shady streets of Wolflin, I wonder what it used to be like back when the city was just getting started.

You had to be tough to make it out here as a settler. And you had to be shrewd and lucky to make it out here as a rancher or oil man. If you found success here in this corner of the wild west, you sure earned it--build whatever you want.

That's what I imagine it was like for those first citizens of Amarillo who decided to set up shop and build homes on South Polk street. The 1700 and 1600 blocks of Polk have always struck me as a little kingdom of sorts--opulent, if you would.

I mean, just look at the Landergin-Harrington House.

That's a home fit for royalty, not cowboys. And it's a monument to time in itself, it was built in 1912 and just look at this:

Over 100 years old and It looks no worse for the wear.

I got curious about how these homes on Polk may have changed through the years. After a little digging, researching, and a little picture-taking, I came up with some amazing photos of these beautiful historic homes from "back then" to compare with photos of what they look like "now".
