Wind in Amarillo is Not a Big Deal Until It Blows Everything Away
It seems like on any news day in Amarillo you just know it's going to be windy. Chicago has nothing on us. It's a bigger deal when we don't have an ounce of wind in the area. I mean that doesn't happen very often.
We had a crazy day last week and it looks like we are in for it again this week. Wednesday can seem some pretty crazy speeds according to the National Weather Service in Amarillo:
Dec 13th: Start preparing now for Wednesday. Strong wind speeds will lead to difficult driving, blowing dust, structural damage (ex. downed power lines), and a higher end wildfire threat. Be prepared to evacuate quickly if a fire threatens your area because any fires that develop may spread quickly
We are being warned a few days in advanced. So what does that mean? You may want to bring some of those Christmas decorations inside. Those inflatables may not stand a chance.
What Else Needs to Be Prepared For Strong Winds?
I see countless posts about those poor trampolines just taking off. Maybe get some huge bricks to put on it. I had a co-worker who's landlord had a tent blow onto her car. What a surprise that was waking up to in the morning.
This is the Texas Panhandle and winds over 40 mph is news. Some areas even up to 60-70 mph. So fire dangers will be up too especially since we haven't had any real rain in a really long time.
I know I have to get outside and secure my plastic bench in front of my house. It's pretty bulky but I got a text from my neighbor over the weekend that it blew away from where it was. I also had some Amazon packages that tried to escape.
You got to love living in the Texas Panhandle when you have to be vigilant in protecting your outdoor decorations and furniture. It's always better to be safe than sorry. Otherwise you may end up walking around your neighborhood hoping to recover your property on Thursday.
