A Delicious Meal That Brings The Family Home When Needed
Living in Amarillo has been great. I really have been here longer than in my hometown of Chicago. I moved her in 1986 so yeah I am a Texan now. The food here is great of course. So many great places to eat. So many great recipes.
Sometimes You Just Miss the Food You Grow Up With?
There is one meal I make that brings me home to the South Side of Chicago when I need a reminder. It doesn't hurt that it is one of my daughter's favorite meals. Heck she has never even been to Chicago.
She already knows she loves their pizza. Oh and is she a fan of their hot dogs. The Chicago Dog to be exact. Whenever I go to visit her or she comes here we make them at least once.
She is in Amarillo now and I have already made them three times. They never get old. She has to get her fill before she heads back to Dallas.
Have You Ever Had a Chicago Dog?
If not you are missing out. There are a few different ways to make them. Sometimes they offer them at Wienerschnitzel and I do partake in those.
The last I was in Chicago I had to get an "official" dog.
Here is how I put my dogs together. Oh and there are a couple different recipes. One puts pickles and others put cucumbers. I go the cucumber route.
I start with the hot dogs and buns. You can't find poppyseed buns in Amarillo. I have tried. I steam both.
I get the veggies ready. I chop tomatoes, cucumbers and onions.
You can't have Chicago Dogs without mustard and relish. I wish I could find the Chicago relish. It is definitely MUCH greener.
The number one most important ingredient is the celery salt. It really is the most important. You just sprinkle it on top of everything else.
You Need to See the Finished Product
Oh the taste of back home Chicago on a plate.
