Flying in and out of Amarillo, Texas, is a pretty straightforward, low-stress process. It usually isn't very crowded, and getting through security doesn't take as long as it does in many other airports.

Recently, a study was done by compiling data from the most recent FAA ASIAS records to see which airports are safest when it comes to close calls on the runway. Amarillo's airport performed significantly better than many airports across the nation.

What the FAA ASIAS Data Reveals

The study, done by Upgraded Points, looked at runway incursions at more than 400 airports in the nation. Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport was one of them, and this is what they found.

Between 2021 and 2024, there were a total of four runway incursions. A runway incursion is when an unauthorized aircraft, vehicle, or person enters the runway. They are classified A through E, with A and B being the most dangerous.

These incursions can lead to disaster, as you might imagine. However, none of Amarillo's four reported incursions ranked in the high-risk A or B range, according to the report.

Runway Incursions: Amarillo vs. National Trends

When you compare this to a place like Atlanta, Georgia, which had 103 incursions in the same time period, it makes you feel pretty good about our airport in Amarillo.

I've never had a bad experience flying out of, or into, Amarillo. There's a bar where I stop to have a pre-flight beer, security is usually a quick process, and there's even a little place where I can grab a bite before I board.

Knowing that over three years there were only four runway incursions, and none of them classified as high risk, makes flying out of Amarillo feel safe. It's one more thing I can add to the list of things I like about Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport.
