When Severe Storms Hit Amarillo, Texas, Watch Out For These Scams
With the storms that we've had in Amarillo and the potential for more, you might find yourself in need of some repairs once the dust has settled. Unfortunately, when storms leave behind damage, there are scammers waiting to pounce. Here's what you need to know to protect yourself and your money.
Watch Out For Scam Contractors In The Texas Panhandle
It's nothing new, yet people still fall for this every time we have severe weather. Scammers pretending to be contractors flood the area offering to repair whatever damage you've suffered. While these people may seem well-meaning and nice, in all reality they're anything but.
You'll chat with them about all the work you need done, but all you'll get is separated from your hard-earned cash. In some cases, scammers are able to make off with a ton of dough before people realize they've been duped.
How To Protect Yourself From Scam Contractors
The Better Business Bureau has a lot of helpful information regarding scam contractors. You can check out the BBB's website for tips, and you can even look up company names to see how they've been reviewed in the past. It's a great tool for helping you identify potential scams.
One of the first things you should do is ask for some kind of license or business identification. Fun fact, this will usually cut the conversation short. Also, bring up permits. You can also do a search for their business name online. A legit business is going to have some kind of presence online.
You can also look up the business on the BBB's website to see if anyone has reported them. Once the work is done, ask for an invoice and pay the contractor directly. Read anything you're asked to sign thoroughly and don't pay for the entire job upfront.
Be safe and protect your bank account.
