Hallelujah! Construction On I-40 in Amarillo Will Be Done In December!
If you were looking for a Christmas miracle, I think I may have found it.
Picture it: No. More. Construction.
That's right, construction along I-40 in Amarillo is 93% complete! (knocks aggressively on wood)
Now, I beg you to read this with caution because it's not ALL that it seems, but it's definitely something to celebrate over.
Construction work along I-40 EAST will be completed in December. Not ALL of I-40 unfortunately.

The bridges at Lakeside, Whitaker and Pullman are now just about completely reconstructed. The only things they have left to finish are the turnarounds, Median barriers and lighting. TxDOT says once that's completed, they expect the project to be done in December.
Sonja Gross, public information officer for Amarillo TxDOT said, "“It was needed, these bridges are more than 50 years old, so they’ve reached the end of their life per se, but they’re also now in a state to where they can accommodate those heavy wide loads,” which is good news considering we seem to have a lot of trucking traffic that rolls through the city.
This is welcome news to a city that's been clogged up by road work. We've seen the project on I-40 around Georgia Street get completed, and I gotta tell ya it's glorious. No more concrete barriers in weird places that I feel like I'm gonna hit. No more merging down to 2 lanes that bottlenecks traffic. It's smooth sailing there now.
However, they are still doing some work in that area. They also expect the Coulter Street bridge to be completed in Spring 2022.
In other words, I do think we see the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel, so hang in there Amarillo. We're about to be a fully functioning city again!
