It’s Finally Happening. Shuffle Up And Deal In Amarillo This Weekend.
It seems like getting to this point has been a long, hard road to travel. Amarillo having its own poker room seemed like something that would never be allowed to happen.
This weekend, though, it's happening. Get ready to shuffle up and deal at the Amarillo Social Club.
The Amarillo Social Club Opens On July 8, 2022
I wrote about this recently, but today I had a chance to actually go visit Amarillo Social Club (the artist formerly known as Amarillo Poker Club) and see it for myself. Friends and neighbors, I mean it when I say this is going to be good.
The facility is nice. Every effort is being taken to make sure we have a nice place to gather and enjoy a card game.
Opening day is Friday, July 8. They'll be open at 1 PM.
Saturday, July 9, there's a free roll tournament kicking off at 2 PM.
I can't believe I'm honestly writing these words about Amarillo, Texas. Let me explain why.
We Were Dangerously Close To Not Having A Club...Again
A few lines ago when I typed out (the artist formerly known as Amarillo Poker Club), I imagined you raising your eyebrows with a small hint of confusion on your face.
At the beginning of the year, it looked like the fight to have a poker club in Amarillo had finally been won. Yellow City was going to be joining cities all over the Lone Star State and allow cards to be dealt. Legally.
There are hundreds of rooms across the state operating legally, and yet the City was determined (or so it seemed) to not let it happen here. Enthusiasts were forced to drive to Lubbock, Midland, Wichita Falls, Dallas, Houston, or vacation in Galveston just to get a seat at a table. No offense to any of the almost all other cities that I left out of that list.
Then, it all came crashing down. The building had been set up. Custom made tables had been built. The City came back with bad news.
Not giving up, Amarillo Poker Club kept fighting for its right to exist. We got good news that the club would be allowed to open, and there was excitement in the air.
Once again, however, we were told there would be a delay and a lot of of us were wondering if this would be the end.
The Birth Of Amarillo Social Club
It's not. It's happening. The club is opening. All that needed to be done (for whatever reason) is the name needed to be "fixed." So with custom felts already placed on custom tables, business cards made, signage made, membership cards made...they had to change the name so that it didn't include the word "poker."
I don't personally care what it's called. It could be called "Skeeter's Luke Warm Hot Dog Shack" for all I care. Though, it does seem a bit nit-picky...doesn't it?
The point is that we have our club, finally, in Amarillo.
This weekend, I'll see you at Amarillo Social Club.
Amarillo Social Club will be open daily, even Sundays, at 1 PM. It's BYOB. There are several restaurants nearby that would love your business. I'm a fan of Sharky's.
Click here to keep up with Amarillo Social Club, and be sure to add them on Poker Atlas. If you can't find Amarillo Social Club, look for Amarillo Poker Club. They're on there.
There's a lounge area where you can get a drink or keep yours cold. There's snacks. There's even a Golden Tee machine.
There are plans, a lot of them, for the future. I don't know how much I'm allowed to give away, but the conversation I had today was a long one and I believe we're all in good hands.
