Protect Yourself From Dangerous Summer Heat In Palo Duro Canyon

Summer is here in the Texas panhandle. The days are long and they are starting to get really hot. For many of us, we love going down to Palo Duro Canyon during these months to hike and enjoy some peace out in nature. As nice as it is to get away to the canyon, you need to prepare and take care of yourself while you're out there.

If It's Hot In Amarillo, It's Very Hot In Palo Duro Canyon

In case you don't know, it gets very hot in Palo Duro Canyon. It's actually advised that you do not hike in the canyon during the heat of the day. It's best in the early hours of the day, or during the evening hours.

It seems like every year we hear stories of people needing to be rescued out of the canyon. Whether it's because they didn't prepare well enough, or they got off the trails and got lost, this is something that can be prevented.

How To Be Safe In Palo Duro Canyon This Summer

The first thing you need to be sure you do is take enough water. It's recommended that you take at least a quarter per mile per person on the hike. Also, be sure to take plenty of water for your pet if you'll be dragging them out of the a/c into the bowels of the biggest natural bowl in Texas.

Also, pro tip, stay on the trails. Don't go getting lost in the heat of the day in the canyon. At best, emergency responders will be able to find you and rescue you quickly. Worst case scenario is something you and I don't want to think about.
