All summer long, we've been hearing about mosquitoes in Amarillo, Texas. They seem to be everywhere and have a knack for sneaking up on you. I'm currently nursing a few bites myself at the moment.

One of the main reasons we keep hearing so much about mosquitoes and how to defend against them is that they can carry West Nile Virus. This virus can cause a multitude of issues, from fever to a coma in severe cases.

Today, it has been reported that West Nile Virus has finally made its way into our area. It has been found lurking in Randall County.

How Was West Nile Found In Randall County

According to a report made by KAMR, the virus was found in blood donated by a resident of the county. That individual wasn't showing symptoms and wasn't counted as a "case."

It's a somewhat scary reminder to do what you can to prevent mosquitoes from biting you. If they don't bite you, chances are they aren't going to give you West Nile Virus. Luckily, it isn't hard to protect yourself from the dreaded skeeters.

How To Protect Yourself Against West Nile Virus And Mosquitoes

One of the easiest and best things to do is to get rid of any standing water in your yard. That includes things like bird baths and dog bowls. Standing water is where mosquitoes like to lay their eggs.

Wear some repellent if you're going to be spending time outdoors. Make sure it is the kind with DEET to help protect you against mosquitoes. Also, wear long sleeves and pants if possible. The more skin you keep covered, the fewer chances they have to bite.

The City of Amarillo does have a form you can use to report areas where mosquito populations are problematic. It can be found on their website. Once a problem area is identified, the City can send a crew to spray it.
