Nothing is more fun this time of year than swimming. Whether it is in a pool or heading out to a lake.

Unfortunately we also start hearing of drownings this time of year.

We need to make this 100% not a thing. Keeping kids safe by the water is totally doable and drownings are totally preventable.

According to the CDC drowning is the #1 cause of unintentional death among young kids. Of course as parents there are some things we need to have on our radar to help prevent this tragedy.

First and foremost teach them how to swim. Get them used to the water and if they are too young to teach make sure they always have a life jacket on. Those little kids are quick and sneaky and you have to do whatever you can to keep them safe.

Of course you should also never leave them alone near the water. Make sure someone is always watching. Oh and really watching. Not looking up from their phone every now and then. It really takes no time to lose sight of a young kid.

If you have a pool please make sure it is properly maintained and protected. Make sure there is a gate to keep kids away. If there is a ladder have it removed when not in use. It is also important to keep the water clear so that you can see if someone is in the water.

Make sure that you know CPR. Actually everyone in your house should know it. You never know when it will save a life. It's easy to get certified. Just contact BSA or NWTH or even the Red Cross. Even Amarillo College offers training. However you go about it make sure you are trained.

Summer should be fun and we need to keep everyone safe.
